Christifideles Laici (Christ's Faithful Laity)

DESCRIPTION: This apostolic exhortation was issued by Pope John Paul II on 30 December 1988 following the 1987 Synod of Bishops, addresses the vocation and mission of the lay faithful in the Church and the world twenty years after the Second Vatican Council. Drawing on the parable of the laborers in the vineyard (Mt 20) and Christ's image of the vine and branches (Jn 15), it presents the lay faithful—defined positively as all non-ordained and non-religious members of the People of God—as fully belonging to the Church's mystery while called to seek God's Kingdom through engagement in temporal affairs. The document emphasizes baptism and confirmation as the foundation of their dignity and mission, urging full participation in the new evangelization by sanctifying the world from within family, work, culture, and politics. It identifies participation as the lay faithful's specific charism, rooted in the universal call to holiness, while warning against clericalizing the laity or laicizing the clergy. Central themes include the original unity of priestly, prophetic, and kingly roles shared by all faithful; formation in doctrine, spirituality, and apostolate; and direct responsibility for evangelizing society amid challenges like secularism and individualism. The exhortation calls for renewed lay commitment to building a "civilization of love," fostering communion in the Church and transforming human realities according to God's plan.
